I finished machine stitching the binding onto the front of the Gratitude quilt this morning. Now to hand stitch it to the back.
The curves on this quilt are gentle enough that I didn’t need to use bias binding. I use Pirate’s method of joining the two ends of the binding and I was concerned that it might not work exactly right for a wavy edge, that I’d either have it too tight or a little too loose. So I pinned the loose ends around the curve, stretching the binding slightly, and followed her instructions for measuring and cutting. It worked just fine!
I usually cut my binding strips at 2-1/4″ and stitch with a 1/4″ seam. I like to use my walking foot and the edge of the foot to the needle measures 3/8″. So this time I cut my strips at 2-1/2″ and stitched with 3/8″. I thought I’d have a teeny bit extra on the back for covering the seam but it looks like I’m going to have to use force. Actually, this will be a good time to glue baste the binding down so that I don’t have to use clips and I can be assured of covering the seam.
I didn’t make my goal of getting all my UFOs done in 2011, so I’ve extended it to 1st half 2012. Hey, my quilts, my rules.

Lovely looking and well balanced quilt with colors in harmony!
