In the 14 years we’ve lived in Richmond, we’ve never had the opportunity to attend the annual “Easter on Parade” event held on Easter Sunday. From pictures I’d seen in the paper, I knew it had something to do with people wearing crazy hats (Easter bonnets) and decked-out dogs. Other than that, I had no clue.
Since Easter dinner was planned for later in the afternoon and it was a beautiful day, I decided this was the time to check it out and see what it’s all about.
It’s not a traditional parade, per se. It’s more of a street party. 4 blocks of Monument Avenue are shut down for several hours and people “parade” up one side and down the other (and in the grassy center divider, too). There are vendor and food booths, much like at the state fair. And a main stage, where I thought there was supposed to be a dog contest at 3pm, but a band was playing instead. So I’m not sure if there really was a contest or not.
Here’s Joey with John in tow:
And some crazy hats:
And dogs:
And other sights:
(this was a life-size “sculpture” in the front yard of one of the homes):
(clown on stilts):
(I have no idea what this was all about):
It was a lot of walking, but fun and something different to do. Next time we go, Joey’s getting all dolled up so that people will take pictures of HIM.
